Daily streaks for staying under all your app limits. Break a day and the streak resets — except when you have a Streak Freeze. You earn one freeze every 7-day milestone (max 3 banked). Freezes auto-apply to a missed day and preserve your streak silently.
The research on streaks is unambiguous: Duolingo's internal data shows users are 2.3x more likely to engage daily once they've built a 7+ day streak. But streaks alone are punitive — one bad day and you're crushed. Streak Freeze fixes that. You still feel the urgency. You just don't get punished for one slip.
